THE MANCHESTER INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
30th April - 7th May 2000
MANCHESTER'S first International Film Festival will take place from the 30th April to the 7th May 2000. This high profile media event combines the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, the content and creativity of Cannes with the vitality and kudos of Manchester! The festival is sponsored and supported by the BBC, Granada TV, British Airways, KPMG, UCI Cinemas and a number of other international and regional companies.
An exciting range of films will be screened from 'Blockbuster to Bollywood'. The festival will be screening features from the major film distributors including a Film Four gangster story titled 'Ghost Dog', starring Forest Whitaker. 'M.I.F.F.' The festival will also screen the Buena Vista film 'Mumford' starring Ted Danson.
The Manchester International Film Festival will feature films to appeal to a cross section of the public. The older film fans are encouraged back to the cinema with the screening of black and white films, featuring George Formby and Diana Dors.
As well as a 'Bollywood' section in the Festival, other programmed activities within the Festival include: Jewish films, a Women's film festival and a young film makers platform. International film titles are being programmed with worldwide distributors and film makers.
The Festival will provide a platform for film makers to show their work, leading to commercial awareness and success. This market place will attract international film associated industries and individuals to Manchester in future years to negotiate film industry deals. This business forum will run alongside public events.
Asian and International stars, possibly Mel Gibson, will attend the festival. The Festival Office is working with Robert Duvall's agent , and also has an association with Fox Studios Australia, with whom we are negotiating to provide celebrities.
This diverse event will lure a range of individuals and companies to the city. The headquarters hotel is the Renaissance, Manchester. Bars, cafes, restaurants, retail and transport will directly benefit from regional and international visitors.
Films are being screened all around Manchester, including the Odeon, Showcase and UCI cinemas, as well as smaller venues, such as Withington's Cine City and the Cornerhouse. This original International event is, according to the British Film Institute, 'groundbreaking' in festival terms, as it is one of the few festivals dealing with multiplex cinemas.
Short films will be screened in several city bars to appeal to film makers who can learn from low budget film makers.
The festival will put the city in the media limelight and will provide a fantastic week of entertainment, welcoming the people of Manchester into the glamorous world of film.
There will also be a 'FILM MAKERS PLATFORM' which will have a panel of experienced film makers, including the most powerful female producer in the country at the moment: Nicola Shindler - 'Queer As Folk' 'Heart' 'Hillsborough' etc. Other panel speakers Phil Hunt, Chris Jones, co-author of 'The Guerilla Film Maker's Handbook' and director of 'White Angel', Janey De Nordwall who are all from The New Producers Alliance. The 'FILM MAKERS PLATFORM' will be on 6th of May at 2.30pm.
